"once upon a time, way way back in October 1994, rob mclennan & James Spyker invented a two-day event called the ottawa small press book fair, and held the first one at the National Archives of Canada..." Spyker moved to Toronto soon after the first one, but the fair continues, thanks in part to the help of generous volunteers, various writers and publishers, and the public for coming out to participate with alla their love and their dollars.

General info:

noon to 5pm (opens at 11am for exhibitors)
admission free to the public.

$20 for exhibitors, full tables
$10 for half-tables
(payable to rob mclennan, c/o 858 Somerset St W, main floor, Ottawa Ontario K1R 6R7).

note for the sake of increased demand, we are now offering half tables. for catalog, exhibitors should send (on paper, not email name of press, address, email, web address, contact person, type of publications, list of publications (with price), if submissions are being considered & any other pertinent info, including upcoming ottawa-area events (if any). also, due to the increased demand for table space, exhibitors are asked to confirm far earlier than usual. i.e. -- before, say, the day of the fair.

the fair usually contains exhibitors with poetry books, novels, cookbooks, posters, t-shirts, graphic novels, comic books, magazines, scraps of paper, gum-ball machines with poems, 2x4s with text, etc, including (at previous events) Bywords, Dusty Owl, Chaudiere Books, above/ground press, Room 302 Books, The Puritan, The Ottawa Arts Review, Buschek Books, The Grunge Papers, Broken Jaw Press, BookThug, Proper Tales Press, and others.

author bios:

Nathaniel G. Moore is the author of the humour
sports book Bowlbrawl (Conundrum, 2005) and the
poetry collection Let's Pretend We Never Met
(Pedlar Press, 2007) He recently co-edited the
critically acclaimed anthology Toronto Noir
(Akashic, 2008) and is currently working on two
fiction projects. He is an editor at both Danforth
Review and Broken Pencil Magazine. His blog of
literature and fashion and music gossip is

Although he grew up grudgingly in Kingston,
Sean Moreland has been an Ottawa resident for the
past ten years. He is currently a doctoral
candidate and literature instructor at the
University of Ottawa, where his morbid preoccupations
are tolerated, if not outright encouraged. He won
the John Newlove Poetry Award in 2007, run by
Bywords, and recently had
his poetry chapbook as part of the same.
 
Kera Willis is a local writer, artist, and musician.
Her first book of
poetry, Tenebrismo, was published by Greyweathers
Press in 2007. As the
creative genius behind Blue Riot Gifts, she creates
and sells unique handmade treasures inspired by
recycled materials and the written word.

Stacey May Fowles' writing has appeared in various
online and print magazines, including Kiss Machine, 
the Absinthe Literary Review, Fireweed, and subTERRAIN.
Her work has been widely anthologized in books including
Nobody Passes: Rejecting The Rules of Gender and
Conformity, First Person
Queer, Yes Means Yes, and I.V. Lounge Nights. Her
first novel, Be Good,
was published by Tightrope Books in 2007, and This
Magazine called it
"probably the most finely realized small press novel
to come out of Canada
in the last year." In fall 2008 she released an
illustrated novel titled
Fear of Fighting, and staged a theatrical adaptation
of the book with Nightwood Theatre. She currently lives
in Toronto and is the publisher of Shameless Magazine.
 
Andrew Faulkner is pursuing his MFA in Creative Writing
at the University of Guelph. He is a co-founder and
former editor-in-chief of Ottawa Arts Review and is also
on the selection committee for Bywords. He is the
author of the chapbook Useful Knots and How to Tie Them 
(2008) and the co-author of Basement Tapes (2007), a
chapbook of poetry and homo-linguistic
translations, with Nicholas Lea and Marcus McCann. He
is a co-founder of The
Emergency Response Unit, a Toronto-based chapbook press.

The Fall Small Press Affair Mini-Fair (Nov 1, 2008)

Because many of you wanted a press fair with a boisterous, party atmosphere, the fall "Small Press Affair" is now going to be an evening mini-fair with entertainment celebrating the sparkling spirit of independent press.

A limited number of tables will be available at the Tranzac Club, so you can sell your wares, network and exchange ideas, while you enjoy readings, music and more.

The spring fair, which is slated for May 30, 2009 at the Miles Nadal JCC, will again be full-fledged daytime event with space for a larger number of tables and a separate room for readings. We’re hoping that one (or perhaps even both) of these two different events will suit the style and needs of your press.

A downloadable registration form will be on-line shortly. Due to limited table space, it’s important that you send in your form as soon as you can.
